UK Mathematics Trust (£20,000)
The United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) was founded to advance mathematics education for children and young people. The Trust organises national mathematics competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities for 11-18 year olds in the UK, ranging from popular 'mass' Maths Challenges to team competitions and forums for teachers. It also selects and trains the UK team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
Oxford and Cambridge scholarships (£105,000)
We completed the third year of five-years' funding to Cambridge University to award three-year scholarships to seven financially disadvantaged students annually studying mathematical disciplines.
We also completed the third year of six-years' funding to Oxford University to award scholarships to 15 students annually studying courses for up to four years.
The Royal Anniversary Trust (£166,668)
We completed the final year of three-years' funding to The Royal Anniversary Trust. The Queen's Anniversary Prizes are awarded for outstanding achievements of excellence by UK universities and colleges in an existing activity, area of work or project. A prize is a national honour, presented by The Queen in an honours ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
Career Academies UK (£20,000)
We continued to support Career Academies UK, a national movement of employers, schools and colleges, working to raise the aspirations of 16-19 year olds who are considering a career in business.
WorldWide Volunteering (£25,000)
WorldWide Volunteering was set up to help promote and encourage young people to volunteer. Their online database enables volunteers to build an on-screen profile of their ideal volunteer placement which is then matched against the requirements of over 1,700 organisations with more than 1,500,000 placements each year throughout the world.
Centre of the Cell (£30,000)
Centre of the Cell is dedicated to inspiring curiosity and learning by connecting science to everyday life. In September 2009, Centre of the Cell will become a fully interactive science centre in London. Informed by extensive evaluation research with more than 7,000 local young people, Centre of the Cell are working with award-winning designers to create a unique, interactive exhibition.
Every Child a Chance Trust – Every Child Counts (£300,000)
We continued our second year of support to Every Child a Chance Trust (£1 million in total) towards a £20.6 million initiative which aims to develop and test out a national numeracy intervention programme to help seven year olds who are struggling with basic number skills.
Every Child Counts is in the first year of a two-year development phase before rolling out nationally in 2010-11. By this stage the programme aims to support approximately 30,000 children a year. The Government is working in partnership with the Every Child a Chance Trust in planning, developing and delivering the programme.
